Negotiate and Thrive in your Next Role!

Tips on preparing for a negotiation from our recent workshop with Jordan Sale, Founder of 81cents:

1. Determine what non-monetary benefits are important to you

Which of the workplace benefits are valuable to you? What schedule and flexibility help you thrive (be as specific as possible)? Think through which things are deal breakers and which are nice to haves.

Examples include: Tuition assistance, review period, bonus structure, parking/commuter benefits, signing bonus, gym membership, snacks/meals at work, happy hours, professional development, title changes, retirement contributions, part-time schedule, flexible start/end times, working from home (WFH), insurance, pet assistance, sick pay, parental leave, childcare, etc.

2. Gather data points (relevant perspectives and insight)

  • 81cents will vet your offer package amongst industry experts. Use discount code HUSTLEHUNTERS for 10% off your report (usually $175).

  • Ask your peers!

    • Tips for starting: What do you think about this offer? What have you seen others in similar roles typically earn?

    • If you were hiring for XXX skill sets, how would you structure the compensation? Flexibility you’d be ok with?

  • Online resources and recruiters (internal/external)

3. Write a Script!

Roll play the conversation out based on what’s important to you and what your best guess is about what is important for the person and team you’re negotiating with. For flexibility asks - think about who will be affected and be prepared with some solutions to mitigate these affects (ex: leaving at 4pm impacts a standing 4:30pm meeting, collaborate to find a potential other time for this meeting)

4. Be Confident

You are the expert on how you thrive - let your future employer in on the secret so they can support you towards doing great work together! 15 uncomfortable minutes can lead to years of happiness when everyone starts on the same page about compensation, the path forwards and flexibility.
