Use your company values to guide the hiring process
These early hires steer the culture and values of your company
Be open to augmenting your company’s values based on the collection of people you’re assembling
Wait until you’re in real pain. Make sure there will be sustained work and need for a hire before adding to your team in such a long-term way, and not just a short-term annoyance you’d like help with.
Determine who will be doing the interviews in advance
Include cross-functional roles in the process
Work together to determine exactly what you’re looking for in this hire, and build out interview questions (and ideally a rubric) to score candidates on answers.
Time kills all deals. Lots of factors in play, but the best hiring happens within a month form start to finish. Plan your hires when you will have a full month to focus on this project.
