Book Review: The Fix
“It’s not you, it’s your workplace” is a mantra that runs throughout Michelle King’s book The Fix. This book is a product of decades of research into the gender imbalance across workplaces, what approaches have been taken to move the needle and the barriers that remain in the way. She also offers detailed “fixes” as solutions that can bring about true equitable shifts and changes at work.
Many of today’s workplaces are a legacy product of an era that was designed for families where mom stayed home and ran the house while dad was the sole breadwinner. King’s findings might be seen as countercultural in that she advocates against many current norms - but if you look at the makeup of families today it becomes evident that she’s really just advocating that workplaces shift to be in line with today’s workforce and societal culture. Building workplaces to support today’s workforce, and beyond (not behind) is the core essence of her recommendations.
This book is filled with statistics and decades of research into this topic across countries, cultures, and industries.
COVID-19 has given us an interesting (and painful) opportunity to reimagine what the future of work could look like, and how it integrates into the rest of our lives and families.
I’m excited at the idea of building workplaces to support today’s employees and their families, and thankful for the detailed research background that The Fix provides to help frame that conversation.
