Book Review: The Memo
Book Review: The Memo
What Women Of Color Need To Know To Secure A Seat At The Table
Book written by Minda Harts
Review written by Edie Greeberg
This book is the Lean In book for women of color. As Minda stated in the first few pages, Sheryl Sandberg's 2013 best-selling book was from the perspective of a woman of privilege and just another career book by a white woman talking about white women sh--! With all due respect, Lean In was a worthwhile read, but it did not represent the experiences of black and brown women.
Inspired by a Drake song with the lyrics "Did y'all boys not get the memo?", Minda had a revelation that the workplace has not gotten The Memo: women of color deserve a seat at the table! This book is Minda's love letter to women of color in all stages of their career, but also should serve as a resource to white men and women to see another perspective and to gain better insight.
Throughout the book, it feels like Minda is having a conversation with you and she's breaking things down in ways that you can relate (many fun references to popular Black celebrities). She's uplifting and serves as your personal cheerleader rooting for you to succeed in your career.
You can't help but want to be friends with Minda once you're done reading. She's funny, sarcastic, authentic and tells you like it is!
